How to Use a Stump Grinder

Landscapers, forestry operations and construction companies must sometimes remove stumps after felling trees or while clearing lots during site preparation. Stump grinders make this troublesome task much easier. They feature a sharp cutting wheel that can grind a stump into sawdust and mulch quickly and efficiently.

If you’re looking to rent a stump grinder, remember that The Cat® Rental Store in your area has what you need. Our vast rental equipment fleet includes high-quality stump grinders from leading manufacturers. We also carry stump grinder attachments that are compatible with Cat machines such as skid steer, compact track, multi-terrain and compact wheel loaders.

Tips for Using a Stump Grinder

A powerful cutting action makes stump grinders an effective stump removal tool — and potentially dangerous to use. Our best stump grinder tips will maximize your results and enable you to use your rental safely:

  • Always wear appropriate safety equipment (goggles, steel-toed boots, long pants, ear protection and work gloves) when you’re operating a stump grinder.
  • Clear the stump and the surrounding area of rocks, branches and other debris.
  • Place the unit on level ground as close to the stump as possible.
  • If you’re using a stump grinder attachment, situate the machine that’s operating the unit near the stump.
  • Position the grinder so that the cutting wheel is directly above the stump.
  • Activate the machine and lower the wheel so that it cuts approximately 3 to 4 inches into the stump (never force the grinder into the stump — let the cutting wheel do the work).
  • Move the grinder slowly from side to side until you reach the desired grinding depth.
  • Continue to move the machine forward in small increments and repeat the process until the stump is gone.
  • Use the same method to remove exposed roots connected to the stump.
  • Rake away the wood chips and remove them for disposal.

If you’re planning to cover the hole you’ve created, fill it with topsoil and put down grass seed. Rake the seed into the soil and water the area regularly.

If you’re not sure how or where to dispose of the wood chips, consider taking them to a local nursery or recycling center. Another option is using them to make compost for gardening or planting.
