Using MB Crusher’s MB-HDS star screener line on the job site eliminates unnecessary downtime
A company in Texas was tasked with an important pipeline project and had to lay down pipes for a new natural gas line. To finish the pipeline, they needed to create backfill but worried over getting the material to their location. With their job site being away from city life, they needed to factor in how long it would take for trucks to arrive, and figure out what to do with the downtime they didn’t want. Not only did they need to figure out what to do for the backfill, but also how to dispose of the waste material they obtained from creating the trench.
The only solution to the client’s problem was to use the soil they acquired, but then wondered how they were going to do it: the material was a mix of dirt and different sized rocks. Before they could use the dirt, they needed a new machine to help them separate the rocks from the fine material. To make sure the equipment didn’t create issues when it should be a solution, they created a list of requirements that the unit needed to meet so they could reach their deadline:
• they had to process material on site,
• if the unit needed maintenance, they wanted to be able to do it at their location,
• and would let them use the excavator they already own.
If they didn’t find a machine that could do the job, they would need to readjust their schedule to meet their deadline.
After researching and considering the best options for their job, the solution that fits all of their requirements and the one they decided on was the MB Crusher’s padding bucket to create their backfill. Once they spoke to one of our specialists, they learned that MB Crusher’s units could be installed on any heavy equipment as long as they fit the weight requirements. The best padding bucket for their Kobelco SK300 LC excavator was the second-largest one, the MB-HDS320.
Since the larger rocks mixed in with the soil wouldn’t create compact backfill and help extend the pipeline’s life, they had to use the finer dirt to layer over the pipe. They equipped the unit with the RQ20 medium sifting kit, which was one of six interchangeable shaft kits. The RQ20 is designed to screen dry soil and has 0.8 inches between the discs; they wouldn’t need to worry about larger rocks mixing with the fines.
By using the MB-HDS320 shaft screener, separating the material was an easy job: all they needed to do was scoop up the mix of rocks and dirt and screen it over the pipeline. The results? They created 360 feet of backfill in an hour and a half and, according to the customer, was 20% to 25% faster than if they were to generate fill without the HDS unit.

The unit is compatible with excavators with an operating weight ranging from 35,300 pounds to 53,000 pounds, or a backhoe or loader with an operating weight ranging from 19,800 pounds to 26,500 pounds.
